How it started

Back in August 2019 I started my MBA. I did it for many reasons - I'm an achiever, I like learning, I like having a full time job and going to school at the same time, I suffer from imposter syndrome, I wasn't very confident, sometimes speaking up was difficult for me, I wanted to be recognized as a leader and figured...wtf...let's do an MBA.

Who would have known what the world was about to experience.

In March 2020, I was on a school trip to Brazil. I went a week early with a few of my classmates to do it up in Rio before starting the school trip. I arrived in Rio on March 10. Yes, Covid was already rampaging through China. In fact, originally my school trip was to Vietnam but that was quickly changed as the proximity to China was too great a risk to travel to Asia. Yes, people did suggest maybe I not go to Rio but March is my birthday month and I wanted a vacation.

March 13, I am sitting in an Alex Atala restaurant in Sao Paolo having the time of my life. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has a news conference telling Canadians abroad they must come home.

March 15, I am home. I don't leave my home in Toronto for 18 months.

May 25, George Floyd is killed by police in Minneapolis. The world is fucked. Millions of people are dying from Covid all around the world, we continue to ravish our planet and are in a climate crisis where it is unlikely the doomsday clock will ever go backwards (in fact in 2023, it went forward another minute closer to 12), we our killing each other because of the colour of our skin. I become way more conscious that I am a woman of colour.
